Chapter 17

Karid woke to mid-morning sunlight on his face. His body felt relaxed and his mind clear. He inhaled, enjoying Ava’s lingering scent on the sheets. The space next to him felt cool. She must already be awake.

Sitting up, he rolled his neck and stretched his arms, working out the kinks. I haven’t slept peacefully in months. What a difference it makes.

Grabbing clean clothes from the refresher, he dressed before folding the rest and putting them away. I don’t deserve Ava’s kindness, but I don’t think I’m strong enough to send her away. He glowered when he remembered his hand wrapped around her neck. After everything she’s been through, I don’t understand why she wasn’t afraid. I was. I need to get well enough so I don’t risk hurting her.

After brushing it, he bound his hair in a ponytail with a leather tie. Sniffing, he followed the smells wafting from the kitchen. His rumbling stomach took him by surprise. I haven’t felt hungry in months either.

Hesitantly, he stopped at the door to the kitchen when he saw Ava dipping bread slices in a bowl before placing them into a pan. She looked up and smiled at him.

“Good morning. I started the French toast when I heard you moving about.”

“I don’t know what French toast is, but it smells wonderful.”

“Could you get some juice out for us?”

“Of course.”

As he was passing behind her, she flinched when a splatter from another pan spit hot grease. His tail caught her by the waist before she could back into his groin. He stepped away quickly once he felt certain she was steady on her feet. That was too close. She might’ve noticed.

His tail made short flicks. He froze when she grabbed it.

“Are you okay? You seem upset.” Her eyes shone with concern.

Swallowing hard, he nodded. Wrinkles appeared on her forehead and she released his tail.

“Thanks for catching me before I barreled into you. It’s a good thing you’re a big, strong guy with quick reflexes.” She winked.

His shoulders tightened and his tail wrapped around his ankle. Gruffly, he said, “Keeping you safe is my priority.”

Frowning slightly, she turned back to finish making morning meal. After getting the juice and setting the table, Karid sat and watched her economical movements as she cooked and placed the food between them.

“I made a syrup or you might like jam or sugar on the French toast.”

Karid watched as Ava put a slice of the golden brown bread on her plate with a fork. She waved the utensil at him.

“Eat. You lost too much weight.”

Glancing down at his empty plate, he admitted, “Food hasn’t tasted good in a long time.”

“Mmm.” She buttered her French toast and poured some syrup on it. “The alcohol probably messed up your taste buds.”

His stomach growled loudly and she laughed.

“I think you need to fill that up before the rumbling brings down the roof.” Her green eyes twinkled.

Sheepishly, he took some food and began eating. A slow smile spread across his face.

“This is really good, Ava.
